## Get your bearings in Kiama Downs

Kiama Downs is mostly homes, one long beach and a short strip of shops. Destination Kiama calls it a scenic and peaceful township a few minutes' drive north of Kiama. The [Minnamurra River](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/things-to-do/minnamurra-river/) runs along its north-western edge, and Jones Beach makes up its eastern edge. Minnamurra is to the north and Bombo to the south.

About 5,087 people lived in Kiama Downs at the 2021 Census, with a median age of 43, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The western part of the suburb, west of Riverside Drive, was previously known as Gainsborough Estate and was developed for housing in the 1980s.

- Where: Kiama Downs NSW 2533, about 4 km north of Kiama town centre, between Minnamurra and Bombo

- From Kiama Ridge Waters: about 9 to 10 minutes by car (7.5 to 8 km), depending on which end of the beach you head for

- Main beach: Jones Beach, patrolled on weekends and public holidays from 26 September to 25 April

- Good for: surfing, a patrolled swim, rockpooling at [low tide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/tools/kiama-tides/), sunrise photos, whale watching and a fish and chips dinner by the beach

- Visitor information: Kiama Visitor Information Centre, 1300 654 262

Cycleways and footpaths link Kiama Downs to [Bombo Beach](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/bombo/) in the south, the Minnamurra River in the north and [Jamberoo](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/towns/jamberoo/) in the west, so it is an easy place to explore on foot or by bike once you arrive.

## Swim and surf at Jones Beach

Photo: Maurice van Creij, [CC BY 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jones_Beach_-_panoramio_(1).jpg)

Jones Beach is the heart of Kiama Downs. Surf Life Saving's BeachSafe describes it as a fairly straight, east-facing beach of about 900 m between 30 m high Minnamurra Point and the basalt columns of Cathedral Rocks. It is also known as Boyds Beach, and BeachSafe lists it as Jones/Boyds. A road runs the full length. The northern half is given over to dunes, parks and the surf club, while houses back the southern half.

Destination Kiama says the beach suits swimmers and surfers of all abilities. Surfers head to the northern end for left-hand waves that break off the rocks, and the southern end is sheltered from southerly winds. BeachSafe notes slight protection from summer north winds at the northern end and a heavy reef break off Cathedral Rocks called Boneyards, which is one for experienced surfers only. For more breaks, see our [Kiama surf guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/kiama-surf/).

Take the swimming advice seriously. BeachSafe rates Jones Beach 7 out of 10 on its hazard scale and calls it rip-dominated, with a single sandbar usually cut by about six rips, including permanent rips against each headland. The northern rip is the stronger one, and there are rocks in the surf toward the southern end. BeachSafe's advice is to swim at the northern end, in the patrolled area.

Kiama Council's 2026 to 2027 timetable has Kiama Downs Surf Life Saving Club volunteers patrolling on weekends and public holidays from 26 September to 25 April. Council lifeguards add weekday patrols from 21 December to 29 January. Outside those times the beach is unpatrolled, so swim between the flags or not at all.

The northern end has the facilities. BeachSafe lists a formal car park, toilets including an accessible toilet, showers, change rooms, a playground, barbecues, picnic areas, shade and a bike path. The surf club also has a beach [wheelchair](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/plan-your-trip/accessible-kiama/) available free of charge, so call ahead if you need it. Destination Kiama lists a carpark, picnic area and public toilet off North Kiama Drive.

## See Cathedral Rocks and the Boneyard at low tide

Photo: Andrew Harvey, [CC BY 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kiama_Downs_NSW_2533,_Australia_-_panoramio_(4).jpg)

Cathedral Rocks stand at the southern end of Jones Beach. Destination Kiama describes them as towering basalt formations, shaped over millions of years as the sea wore away extremely hard volcanic rock. Destination Kiama calls them a photographer's dream, especially at sunrise. Our [Kiama sunrise and sunset guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/kiama-sunrise-sunset/) has timing tips.

There are two easy ways in. You can park at Jones Beach and walk south along the sand to the rocks, or park on Cliff Drive and look down from the grassy clifftop. Just south of the stacks is the Boneyard, a sheltered pebbly beach on the northern side of the Bombo peninsula, at the southern end of Cliff Drive. The Kiama Coast Walk passes it.

The rock platforms around Cathedral Rocks are popular with fishers, according to BeachSafe. If you want to explore them, go around low tide, on a day with a small swell, and turn back as soon as the tide starts to rise. BeachSafe describes Cathedral Rocks as isolated and rock-dominated, and waves can wash across the platforms without warning. Wear shoes with grip and keep away from the outer edge. Our [Kiama rock pools guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/kiama-rock-pools/) covers the routes in more detail, and the [Cathedral Rocks guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/landmarks-and-walks/cathedral-rocks/) covers the stacks themselves.

Destination Kiama asks visitors to leave only footprints and to pick up three pieces of litter when they leave, as part of Take 3 for the Sea. It also notes the site does not cater for people with access needs.

## Watch for whales from Minnamurra Headland

Photo: Public Preservation, [CC0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Big_hill.jpg)

At the northern end of Jones Beach, a path climbs around the headland to the Minnamurra Whale Watching Platform and on to the Minnamurra River. Destination Kiama lists the platform among the things to see in Kiama Downs, with Stack Island and the Minnamurra River in view from the headland.

Our [whale watching in Kiama guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/landmarks-and-walks/whale-watching-kiama/) explains when to look and which other [lookouts](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/landmarks-and-walks/kiama-lookouts/) work well. From the top of the headland you can also see the sandbanks of the Minnamurra River mouth, which is covered in our [Minnamurra guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/towns/minnamurra/).

### Minnamurra Whale Watching Platform

## Walk the northern section of the Kiama Coast Walk

Photo: Andrew Harvey, [CC BY 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Minnamurra_NSW_2533,_Australia_-_panoramio_(1).jpg)

The Kiama Coast Walk runs right through Kiama Downs. Its northern section starts at Minnamurra station, rounds the headland, follows the long curve of Jones Beach, then passes Cathedral Rocks, the Boneyard and Bombo Headland before continuing south to Kiama. If you only have an hour, walk from the surf club to Cathedral Rocks along the sand and back, or do the headland loop to the whale platform.

Free water refill stations sit along the Coast Walk, so bring a reusable bottle. See our [Kiama Coast Walk guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/landmarks-and-walks/kiama-coast-walk/) for the full route, the map and [where to park](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/plan-your-trip/kiama-parking/) at each end.

## Eat and shop on Johnson Street

Photo: Ashley Van Haeften, [CC BY 2.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flat_white.jpg)

Across the road from Jones Beach, a short row of shops on Johnson Street covers most of what you need for a beach day. Destination Kiama mentions [cafes](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/kiama-cafes/), a supermarket and fish and chips here, and the strip also has a bakery, a pharmacy and a general practice. Small shops change hands often, so check current opening hours on Google Maps before you go.

For more choice, central Kiama is about 10 minutes' drive south. See our guides to [where to eat in Kiama](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/where-to-eat-in-kiama/) and [Kiama fish and chips](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/kiama-fish-and-chips/).

## Play a round at Kiama Golf Club

Kiama Golf Club is at 79-81 Oxley Avenue, Kiama Downs. It has been the home of golf in Kiama since 1905, and on this site since 1930. Visitors are welcome all year, but tee times must be booked ahead, and players check in at the pro shop before teeing off.

You do not need to play to visit. The club's website lists a cafe and bistro that opens for coffee from 6.30am, with breakfast from 8 to 11am, lunch from 11.30am to 3pm and dinner from 5.30 to 8pm. Hours can change, so check before you go. Our [Kiama golf guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/things-to-do/kiama-golf/) covers the other courses nearby.

## Bring the dog to the southern end of Jones Beach

Photo: Maurice van Creij, [CC BY 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cathedral_Rocks_-_panoramio.jpg)

Kiama Council does not allow dogs on beaches unless the area is a designated off-leash zone, and the southern end of Jones Beach is one of them. Destination Kiama's pet-friendly holiday guide says dogs can run off-leash there from sunrise to sunset, and you must enter and leave only by the beach access track. The rest of Jones Beach is dog-free, so keep the dog on a lead until you reach the off-leash zone, and follow the signs on the day.

A few minutes south, Destination Kiama lists the Bombo Headland off-leash area and dog agility park, off Cliff Drive, with parking off Hutchison Street. Most Kiama Ridge Waters apartments take pets, with a $200 cleaning fee. See [pet-friendly accommodation in Kiama](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/stay/pet-friendly/).

## Get to Kiama Downs by car, bus or train

Photo: Abesty, [CC BY-SA 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Minnamurra_railway_station.jpg)

Driving is the easiest way. From Kiama Ridge Waters it takes about 9 minutes to reach the southern end of Jones Beach and Cathedral Rocks (about 7.5 km), and about 10 minutes to the Johnson Street shops and the surf club (about 8 km). By bike it is about 25 to 30 minutes each way.

Kiama Downs has no railway station of its own. The nearest stations are Minnamurra, to the north, and Bombo, to the south, both on the South Coast Line that runs through Kiama. For buses, Destination Kiama lists Premier Illawarra (02 4271 1322) as serving Kiama and Kiama Downs, continuing to Shellharbour and Wollongong. Plan your trip and check timetables on [Transport NSW](https://transportnsw.info/).

If you are coming from Sydney, our [Sydney to Kiama guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/plan-your-trip/sydney-to-kiama/) covers the drive and the train.

## Stay in Kiama and drive up for the day

Kiama town makes an easy base for a day at Kiama Downs. Our three-bedroom holiday apartments at Kiama Ridge Waters, 2 Surfleet Place, share one layout, on the ground floor or the first floor, in a quiet residential street rather than on the beach. Easts Beach is a 15-minute walk away, and Kiama station and the town centre are about 27 minutes on foot.

From there, Jones Beach and Cathedral Rocks are about 9 to 10 minutes north by car, and [Gerringong](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/towns/gerringong/) is about 10 minutes south. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is by 10am. You can cancel for a full refund up to two days before check-in, less a 3% payment fee.
