# Berry NSW day trip from Kiama for food, markets and wineries

Berry NSW is a heritage country town in the Shoalhaven, about 15 minutes' drive (20.5 km) from Kiama Ridge Waters along the Princes Highway. Spend the day on Queen Street's bakeries, shops and old pubs, time it for the first-Sunday markets or the Thursday farmers' market, and add a cellar door or Seven Mile Beach on the way home.

## Get to Berry from Kiama

Photo: Mattinbgn, [CC BY 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Berry_Main_Street_001.JPG)

Berry sits under the green hills of the Shoalhaven, and Visit Shoalhaven calls it the first proper country town south of Sydney. Visit NSW puts it just over two hours' drive from the city. From Kiama it is a short hop: drive south past [Gerringong](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/towns/gerringong/) on the Princes Highway and you are parking on Queen Street in about 15 minutes.

From Kiama Ridge Waters to | By car |

Queen Street, Berry town centre | About 15 minutes (20.5 km) |

Berry station | About 15 minutes (21 km) |

Berry Showground (markets) | About 17 minutes (21 km) |

Silos Estate, Jaspers Brush | About 20 minutes (28 km) |

Coolangatta Estate, Bolong Road | About 28 minutes (33 km) |

Kangaroo Valley, via Berry | About 35 minutes (40 km) |

By train. Berry station is on the [South Coast Line](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/plan-your-trip/sydney-to-kiama/). Electric trains from Sydney finish at Kiama, and a diesel shuttle runs on from Kiama through Gerringong to Berry and Bomaderry. The shuttle runs less often than the Sydney trains, and some early and late services are replaced by buses, so check times on [Transport NSW](https://transportnsw.info/) before you plan around it. Kiama station is about 27 minutes' walk from the apartments, and Berry station is roughly a 10-minute walk from Queen Street.

Parking. Queen Street can be busy on weekends and market days. Try the side streets off Queen Street if the main strip is full.

## Walk Queen Street and the heritage buildings

Berry began in 1825 as Broughton Creek, a private town on land held by Alexander Berry, whose Coolangatta Estate dates from 1822. It grew as a service town for sawmilling and dairying and took the Berry family's name in 1889. The 2021 census counted 2,467 people living there, and on a sunny Saturday it can feel like most of the South Coast has come to visit.

Queen Street is lined with heritage buildings, [cafes](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/kiama-cafes/) and shops, and Visit NSW points antique hunters to the old courthouse. Start at one end and work your way along: an hour is enough for a browse, longer if you stop for coffee.

A few buildings are worth stopping for:

- Berry Museum at 135 Queen Street sits in the former ES&A Bank, designed by colonial architect William Wardell and finished in 1886. It holds photographs, records and objects from the area's farming, dairying and timber past.

- The Berry Hotel at 120 Queen Street was established in 1863 and still runs as a pub with meals, a drinks list and rooms upstairs.

- Berry Courthouse at 58 Victoria Street, a block back from Queen Street, is heritage listed. Visit NSW lists it as a stop on the town's self-guided historical walk.

The Berry and District Historical Society lists museum hours of 11am to 3pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, plus Mondays and Fridays in school holidays. Check before you go.

## Eat your way along Queen Street

Photo: Maksym Kozlenko, [CC BY-SA 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Berry_-_panoramio_(39).jpg)

Food is the main reason most people drive to Berry. You can graze all day without moving the car.

Start with something sweet. The Berry Donut Van on Queen Street has been making cinnamon doughnuts for decades. Expect a queue on busy days. Milkwood Bakery, next door to the post office, opened in 2012 and bakes Berry Organic Sourdough, cakes, pastries and savouries, with [takeaway](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/kiama-takeaway/) coffee.

Stay for lunch. The Garden at 103 Queen Street serves breakfast, lunch, coffee and drinks, with a dog-friendly courtyard out the back. The Berry Hotel and the Great Southern Hotel are the two old [pubs](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/kiama-pubs/), both on Queen Street.

Book dinner ahead. South on Albany, on the corner of Queen and Albany streets, holds one hat in the Good Food Guide. It serves a three-course chef's menu that changes every few weeks, with dinner Wednesday to Saturday and lunch on about two Sundays a month.

Take treats home. The Treat Factory sits in the old Central Creamery on Old Creamery Lane. It sells chocolates, old-fashioned lollies and condiments, runs chocolate workshops, and its Dairy Bar serves [gelato](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/kiama-ice-cream/), milkshakes and light meals. The Berry Tea Shop on Albert Street is a shop for all things tea, from loose leaf to teapots.

South on Albany is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so if you are staying for dinner early in the week, ring ahead to check what is open. For more food closer to the apartments, see our guides to [where to eat in Kiama](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/where-to-eat-in-kiama/) and [Gerringong cafes and restaurants](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/gerringong-cafes-and-restaurants/).

## Time your trip for a market day

Photo: Nick-D, [CC BY-SA 4.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fruit_and_vegetable_stall_at_Southside_Farmers_Market_November_2025.jpg)

Berry's two regular markets are reason enough to pick your day.

The Berry Markets, also called the Berry Country Fair, run at Berry Showground, 35 Alexandra Street, on the first Sunday of every month except February. Expect local produce, plants, handmade goods and food. The showground is about 17 minutes' drive from the apartments.

The Berry Farmers' Market runs every Thursday afternoon. Visit NSW lists it at Berry Bowling Club, 140 Queen Street, where growers and makers sell seasonal produce directly. Check the market's Facebook page for current hours.

In February the showground hosts the Berry Show, a country agricultural show held on the first weekend of the month. For markets closer to home, see our [Kiama markets guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/kiama-markets/).

## Taste wine at the cellar doors around Berry

Photo: thinkrorbot, [Public domain](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hunter_Valley_Vineyards_(23754488685).jpg)

Berry is in the Shoalhaven Coast wine region, and three cellar doors are a short drive from town.

Silos Estate is on the Princes Highway at Jaspers Brush, a few minutes south-west of Berry. Its cellar door is open seven days, 11am to 5pm, except Christmas Day. Book tastings ahead; walk-ins are taken when there is room. There is a restaurant, cottages over the vines and an alpaca shop.

Two Figs Winery at 905 Bolong Road is a small-batch winery opened by Shayne and Alison Bricker in 2003. Its cellar door looks over the Shoalhaven River through floor-to-ceiling windows. Visitors with a dog can sit at a picnic table on the lawn, but check first.

Coolangatta Estate on Bolong Road dates its story to 1822, when Alexander Berry settled the land, and has been run by the same family since 1947. The cellar door opens daily from 11am, and there are 26 [heritage-listed](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/landmarks-and-walks/kiama-history-and-heritage/) motel rooms if you want to stay.

Opening hours and booking rules change, so check each website before you go, and book a driver if everyone wants to taste. Our [wineries near Kiama](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/wineries-near-kiama/) guide covers these plus Crooked River Estate at Gerringong.

## Add a beach, a lookout or Kangaroo Valley

Photo: Vmenkov, [CC BY-SA 4.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E9516-Drawing-Room-Rocks.jpg)

Berry is inland, so if you want the sea, take the coast road one way.

Go via Gerroa and Seven Mile Beach. From Kiama, drive to [Gerroa](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/towns/gerroa/) in about 13 minutes, then on through [Seven Mile Beach National Park](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/seven-mile-beach/) and inland to Berry in another 15 minutes or so. The long beach and its picnic areas make a good stop for a swim or a walk before lunch.

Climb to Drawing Room Rocks, with care. The sandstone ledges in Barren Grounds Nature Reserve, above Berry, look out over farmland, the escarpment and east towards Gerroa. The Illawarra Mercury describes a steep 4.5 km return walk with a 350-metre climb, unfenced cliff faces and parking for only a few cars near a locked private gate off Brogers Creek Road. The paper notes the track is not maintained or recommended by National Parks or Shoalhaven City Council, so only go if you are fit, the track is dry and you have daylight to spare.

Keep going to Kangaroo Valley. The road climbs from Berry over the range to Kangaroo Valley in about 22 minutes, which makes a long loop day of about 35 minutes each way from the apartments.

## Plan a full day in Berry

Photo: JustARandomEditor123, [CC BY-SA 4.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Berry_Railway_Station.jpg)

Here is one way to fit it all in, leaving Kiama after breakfast:

- 9.30am. Drive to Gerroa and walk on Seven Mile Beach.

- 11am. Head inland to Berry. Doughnuts from the van, coffee and a wander along Queen Street.

- 12.30pm. Lunch at The Garden or one of the pubs, or a picnic with supplies from Milkwood Bakery.

- 2pm. On a weekend, the museum is open until 3pm. Otherwise, browse the shops or call into The Treat Factory.

- 3pm. A tasting at Silos Estate, a few minutes south-west of town, before the drive home.

- 5pm. Back in Kiama for a swim at [Easts Beach](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/easts-beach-kiama/), or stay in Berry for dinner if you have booked.

On the first Sunday of the month, swap the morning beach for the markets, and get to the showground early before the parking fills.

## Quick answers

**How far is Berry from Kiama?**

Berry is about 15 minutes' drive (20.5 km) from Kiama Ridge Waters along the Princes Highway, past Gerringong. By train, the South Coast Line diesel shuttle runs from Kiama through Gerringong to Berry. Check times on Transport NSW, as the shuttle runs less often than the Sydney trains.

**What day are the Berry markets on?**

The Berry Markets run at Berry Showground, 35 Alexandra Street, on the first Sunday of every month except February. The Berry Farmers' Market runs every Thursday afternoon, and Visit NSW lists it at Berry Bowling Club on Queen Street. Confirm venues and times before you go.

**What is Berry NSW known for?**

Berry is known for its heritage main street, food and shopping. Queen Street has nineteenth-century buildings, the Berry Donut Van, bakeries, pubs, homewares shops and galleries. Monthly markets, the Berry Show in February and cellar doors such as Silos Estate and Coolangatta Estate bring visitors too.

**How far is Berry from Sydney?**

Visit NSW puts Berry just over two hours' drive south of Sydney, and around three hours by train. From Kiama it is only about 15 minutes by car, so it is an easy day trip from a stay on the coast. Allow extra time for weekend traffic.

**Can you catch the train from Kiama to Berry?**

Yes. Electric trains from Sydney end at Kiama, and a diesel shuttle continues to Gerringong, Berry and Bomaderry. Berry station is roughly a 10-minute walk from Queen Street. Some early and late services are replaced by buses, so plan your trip on transportnsw.info.

**Is there a beach in Berry?**

No, Berry is an inland town. The nearest beach is Seven Mile Beach, a short drive east through Gerroa or Shoalhaven Heads. Coming from Kiama, you can drive via Gerroa and the national park in about 28 minutes and swim before heading into Berry for lunch.
