# Bombo Beach and Bombo Headland, Kiama's surf beach and basalt quarry

Bombo Beach is a 1.2 km surf beach just north of Kiama, between Bombo Headland and Pheasant Point. It is known for its waves, especially at the north end, but strong rips make swimming risky outside the summer patrols. The basalt columns of the old Bombo Quarry sit on the headland, and Bombo station is metres from the sand.

## Know Bombo Beach before you go

Photo: Maurice van Creij, [CC BY 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bombo_Beach_-_panoramio.jpg)

Bombo Beach (NSW 392 on the Surf Life Saving register) is the long, exposed stretch of sand between central Kiama and Kiama Downs. It faces east and runs about 1.2 km from the old quarry on Bombo Headland in the north to the steep rise of Pheasant Point in the south. The Princes Highway and the South Coast railway run right behind it, so most people see it first from the car or the train window.

It is a beach for surfing, walking, dogs and photos rather than an easy family swim. BeachSafe rates it 7 out of 10 for hazard. A small creek crosses the northern end, and the larger Spring Creek drains out against the southern rocks.

- Length: about 1.2 km (BeachSafe, Visit NSW)

- Hazard rating: 7 out of 10 on BeachSafe

- Patrols: North Bombo only, by Kiama Council lifeguards, daily from 21 December to 31 January and on weekends in February

- Dogs: [off-leash](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/dog-friendly-beaches-kiama/) in the signed centre section, sunrise to sunset

- Facilities: car park, toilets and picnic tables at the Bombo Beach (North) reserve

- Access needs: Visit NSW lists the beach as not catering for people with access needs

- Address: Princes Highway, Bombo NSW 2533

- From Kiama Ridge Waters: about 4 minutes by car (3.6 km) to the south end, or 8 minutes (7 km) to Bombo station

## Respect the rips and swim only between the flags

Bombo looks inviting from the highway, but the surf is the reason most locals drive past to calmer beaches. BeachSafe says waves average about 1.5 m and keep the surf zone dominated by rips. There are strong permanent rips against each headland and three or four more that move along the beach between them. Troughs often connect along the shore, which is why BeachSafe does not recommend swimming here. It also flags sharks and bluebottles.

If you do want a dip, go to the northern end when the lifeguards are on duty and swim between the red and yellow flags. Kiama Council's 2026 to 2027 timetable lists North Bombo Beach as patrolled seven days a week from 21 December to 31 January, then on weekends only in February. Outside those dates, Bombo is unpatrolled.

Kiama Council has installed an Emergency Relay Beacon at South Bombo Beach. Pressing it connects you to Surf Life Saving NSW and alerts the nearest lifesaver or lifeguard. Check [BeachSafe](https://beachsafe.org.au/beach/nsw/kiama/bombo/bombo) for the day's swell, tide and patrol status before you go in.

[With children](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/things-to-do/things-to-do-in-kiama-with-kids/), a calmer pocket beach is the better plan. [Easts Beach](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/easts-beach-kiama/) is a 15-minute walk from our apartments, and our [Kiama beaches guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/) compares every beach in the area. For still water, try the [Kiama rock pools](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/kiama-rock-pools/).

## Surf the beach breaks at the north end

Photo: Philip Terry Graham (resized), [CC BY 2.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Panorama_of_Bombo,_New_South_Wales.jpg)

Bombo is one of the most popular surf breaks on the Kiama coast. Destination Kiama says most of the action is at the north end, while the south end also picks up good swell. Visit NSW and Kiama Coast Holiday Parks both describe it as predominantly a surfing beach, with rips and sandbars that shape the waves.

BeachSafe notes that most surfers use the northern end near the car park, and that summer north winds blow slightly offshore in the top corner. Three or four of the rips move along the beach, so the sandbars and peaks shift too.

Around the headland, the Boneyard has a reef break that Destination Kiama says is mostly rights. Beginners are better off starting in small swell at a patrolled beach. Our [Kiama surf guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/kiama-surf/) lists the other breaks, from Surf Beach in town to Werri at [Gerringong](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/towns/gerringong/).

## Explore the basalt columns of Bombo Headland Quarry

The northern headland is the reason many people search for Bombo. Its grey-black basalt columns rise from a flat quarry floor beside the sea, and Destination Kiama and Visit NSW both compare the scene to walking on the moon. The headland is a favourite with photographers, especially at sunrise, and Destination Kiama says it often features in television commercials and photo shoots.

The columns are what remains of blue metal quarrying, which Destination Kiama and Visit NSW date to the 1880s and 1900s. Quarrying cut into the headland and exposed the columns, and more than a century of waves has weathered them since. The site is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register (item 177) as the Bombo Headland Quarry Geological Site.

Destination Kiama describes the basalt columns as well-marked detours off the Kiama Coast Walk, worth the extra few minutes.

Stay safe on the rocks: the quarry floor is rough, loose underfoot and open to the swell. Wear sturdy shoes, keep off the edges and stay well back from the water when waves are breaking over the platform. Visit NSW lists the headland as not catering for people with access needs.

## Walk round the point to the Boneyard and Cathedral Rocks

Photo: Andrew Harvey, [CC BY 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bombo_NSW_2533,_Australia_-_panoramio_(9).jpg)

Keep going north around the headland and the coast changes again. Visit NSW describes the Boneyard as a rocky shoreline of hexagonal basalt columns that includes Cathedral Rock. Destination Kiama describes it as a sheltered cove reached by a short walk on a wooden footpath through forest, and suggests it for a picnic or a snorkel on calm days.

Cathedral Rocks, the sea stacks just beyond, sit off Cliff Drive at Kiama Downs, and the Bombo Headland dog agility park looks over them. Our [Cathedral Rocks guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/landmarks-and-walks/cathedral-rocks/) covers the viewpoints and how to get there.

The rocks around the point face the open ocean. In a big swell, waves can wash over the basalt, so watch the sea for a few minutes before you climb down and never turn your back on it.

## Bring the dog to the off-leash section

Photo: JustARandomEditor123, [CC BY-SA 4.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bombo_Beach.jpg)

Kiama Council allows dogs off-leash and in the water in the centre section of Bombo Beach, from sunrise to sunset every day. Signs on the sand mark the northern and southern limits.

Council asks you to use the shortest route on and off the beach and to keep dogs leashed until you reach the zone:

- From the north: take the walking track beside the train tunnel entry to the northern car park.

- From the south: use the fenced walkway under the railway bridge from the Hothersal Street car park.

Dogs must be registered and wear a collar and tag, a person over 16 must have them under effective control, and you must pick up after them. Dangerous and restricted breeds are not allowed. There is a bin, plus poo bag dispensers.

Up on the headland, the Bombo Headland off-leash and dog agility park is off Cliff Drive, Kiama Downs, with views of Cathedral Rocks, Jones Beach and Minnamurra Headland.

Most of our apartments take pets on request, with a $200 pet cleaning fee. See [pet-friendly accommodation in Kiama](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/stay/pet-friendly/).

## Fish the gutters along the beach

Photo: Maksym Kozlenko, [CC BY-SA 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bombo_beach_-_panoramio.jpg)

The same rips that make Bombo hard for swimmers make it good for beach fishing. BeachSafe says the persistent rips carve good gutters along the whole length of the beach. Look for the darker, deeper water between the sandbanks.

The headland rocks are exposed and slippery, so rock fishing here carries real risk. Wear a life jacket, check the swell forecast and fish with someone else. Our [Kiama fishing guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/things-to-do/kiama-fishing/) covers licences, rules and safer spots.

## Walk the Kiama Coast Walk across Bombo

Photo: Katall01, [CC BY-SA 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Bombo.jpg)

Bombo sits on the North Section of the Kiama Coast Walk, which Destination Kiama lists as 8.5 km from Minnamurra station to the [Kiama Blowhole](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/landmarks-and-walks/kiama-blowhole/), taking about 3 hours, graded medium. Heading south, the track passes Jones Beach, Cathedral Rocks and the Boneyard before crossing Bombo Headland, where the basalt columns are signed detours. Destination Kiama notes that North Bombo Beach gives walkers their first view of Kiama township.

At south Bombo you have two choices. Turn west under the highway to Hutchison Street, which leads past Kiama Cemetery and the Spring Creek Wetland, or carry on along the beach towards town and the Blowhole.

For a shorter walk, catch the train to Bombo, walk the beach and headland, and take the train back from the same platform. Our [Kiama Coast Walk guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/landmarks-and-walks/kiama-coast-walk/) covers every section, and [walks in Kiama](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/landmarks-and-walks/walks-in-kiama/) lists shorter strolls.

## Get to Bombo Beach by car or train

Photo: Abesty, [CC BY-SA 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bombo_railway_station.jpg)

By train: Bombo station is on the [South Coast Line](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/plan-your-trip/sydney-to-kiama/), one stop north of Kiama, and Visit NSW notes it sits just metres from the sand, with services from Sydney and Wollongong. Transport NSW lists a commuter car park, a wheelchair-accessible car space, an emergency help point and stairs. The station is unstaffed, and you cannot top up an Opal card or buy a single ticket there, so sort your fare before you travel. Some intercity trains are longer than the platform, so check which carriage to ride in on the [Transport NSW trip planner](https://transportnsw.info/).

By car: BeachSafe warns that the northern car park and amenities, on the slope above the beach, are reached by a circuitous drive under the railway. For the south end, park at Hothersal Street in Kiama and take the fenced walkway under the railway bridge. From Kiama Ridge Waters that is about 4 minutes by car (3.6 km). Cathedral Rocks and Cliff Drive at Kiama Downs are about 9 minutes (7.4 km).

On foot: the south end is about a 43-minute walk (3.5 km) from 2 [Surfleet Place](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/live-and-own/kiama-ridge-waters-location/). Our [Kiama parking guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/plan-your-trip/kiama-parking/) has more on where to leave the car.

## Spot the SS Bombo memorial in town

The name Bombo also belongs to a ship. Back in Kiama, near Black Beach and the harbour, a memorial marks the SS Bombo. Destination Kiama says the ship left Kiama for the final time on 24 February 1949 and that its wreck is now a popular dive site. It is a short stop on a walk around [Kiama Harbour](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/landmarks-and-walks/kiama-harbour/).

## Pair Bombo with Kiama Downs and Minnamurra

Photo: Maurice van Creij, [CC BY 3.0](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jones_Beach_-_panoramio_(1).jpg)

Bombo is the gateway to Kiama's northern suburbs. Destination Kiama points to Kiama Downs, just north, for [cafes](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/eat-and-drink/kiama-cafes/), a [pharmacy](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/plan-your-trip/kiama-pharmacy/), a small grocer and a golf course by the sea, and to Jones Beach for a family-friendly beach with a park. Free water refill stations sit along the Coast Walk and around town.

Make a morning of it: sunrise photos on Bombo Headland, a coffee in [Kiama Downs](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/towns/kiama-downs/), then a swim at the patrolled end of Jones Beach or a walk to the river mouth at [Minnamurra](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/towns/minnamurra/). Our [Kiama sunrise and sunset guide](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/explore-kiama/beaches/kiama-sunrise-sunset/) has more early-morning spots.

## Stay in Kiama, 4 minutes from Bombo Beach

From Kiama Ridge Waters, our three-bedroom apartments at 2 Surfleet Place, Bombo's south end is about a 4-minute drive, so a dawn surf or a sunrise shoot at the quarry is easy. The apartments are not on the beach and do not have ocean views. Easts Beach is a 15-minute walk and Kendalls Beach 16 minutes, and the town centre and station are about 27 minutes on foot.

Back at the apartment, your own laundry takes care of wetsuits and sandy towels. Each one sleeps six, with two bathrooms and secure parking for two cars. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is by 10am. [Compare the apartments](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/apartments/), book [several apartments for a group](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/stay/groups/), see [wedding accommodation in Kiama](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/stay/weddings/) if you are shooting photos at the headland, or [check dates and book](https://ridgewaterskiama.com.au/book/).

### Staying at Kiama Ridge Waters

The south end of Bombo Beach is about 4 minutes (3.6 km) by car from Kiama Ridge Waters, and Bombo station is one stop north of Kiama. Kiama Ridge Waters offers three-bedroom apartments at 2 Surfleet Place, Kiama, each sleeping six with parking for two cars.

## Quick answers

**Is Bombo Beach safe for swimming?**

Not usually. BeachSafe rates Bombo Beach 7 out of 10 for hazard, with strong permanent rips against both headlands and three or four moving rips between them, and does not recommend swimming. If you swim, stay at the northern end between the flags while lifeguards are on duty.

**Is Bombo Beach patrolled?**

Only North Bombo Beach, and only in summer. Kiama Council lifeguards patrol it every day from 21 December to 31 January, then on weekends in February, under the 2026 to 2027 timetable. The rest of the year Bombo is unpatrolled. An emergency relay beacon is installed at South Bombo.

**Are dogs allowed on Bombo Beach?**

Yes, in the signed centre section. Kiama Council allows dogs off-leash and in the water there from sunrise to sunset. Enter via the track beside the train tunnel at the northern car park or the fenced walkway from Hothersal Street, and keep dogs leashed outside the zone.

**What is Bombo Quarry?**

Bombo Quarry is the old blue metal quarry on Bombo Headland, worked in the 1880s and 1900s, according to Destination Kiama. Quarrying exposed tall basalt columns that the sea has weathered since. It is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register as the Bombo Headland Quarry Geological Site and is popular for sunrise photos.

**How do you get to Bombo Beach by train?**

Take a South Coast Line train to Bombo station, one stop north of Kiama. Visit NSW notes the platform is just metres from the sand. The station is unstaffed and does not sell tickets or Opal top-ups, so check times and fares on the Transport NSW trip planner first.

**Where do you park for Bombo Beach?**

There is a formal car park at the northern end, reached by a circuitous drive under the railway, and a car park on Hothersal Street in Kiama for the south end, with a fenced walkway under the railway bridge. Bombo station also has a commuter car park.

**Is Bombo Beach good for surfing?**

Yes. Bombo is a well-known surf beach, with most surfers at the north end near the car park. BeachSafe says summer north winds blow slightly offshore in the top corner. Around the headland, the Boneyard has a reef break that Destination Kiama says is mostly rights.

**How far is Bombo Beach from Kiama?**

Very close. The south end of Bombo Beach is about 4 minutes and 3.6 km by car from Kiama Ridge Waters, or about a 43-minute walk. By train, Bombo is the next stop north of Kiama station.
